The ocean was waiting for him and he was walking into it. It was familiar and comforting and held the answers he sought. He had heard her call, and he knew she would reveal all. He smiled as he approached her. This was where he belonged; this was what he deserved.
He paused, unsure, and in that instant, a hand closed over his arm, the grip vice-like, and Heldith woke with a start. Even through the pelting rain, he couldnât but recognise Pelthiel. He was bewildered. The last he remembered he had been on his bed, about to fall asleep, so what was he doing here by the ocean? Dread settled on his stomach, heavy as lead as he saw how near he was to the sea. Pelthiel had once again saved his life.
âWhat happened?â he asked, allowing himself to be pulled along.
âYou were sleepwalking, right into the ocean,â Pelthiel said.
âYeah, I can see that,â Heldith muttered.
That was not what he meant, but what was he expecting Pelthiel to say? Once they were inside the house, Pelthiel said, âYou should go and change. Come to the library afterwards. Let me see what I can do.â
Heldith nodded, and trudged back to his room, water dripping off of him in rivulets. He entered the room just as a crash of thunder pealed and all three of his friends woke up startled.
âWhat-â Sivreth started
âWhy are you wet?â Amerla asked.
Kiriel was just looking at him without a word.
âI sleepwalked straight into the ocean,â Heldith said. âPelthiel stopped me.â he paused. âHe wants to talk to me.â
âWeâll come with,â Amerla said. âIf heâs trying to keep you safe, we too need to know how.â
Heldith felt a surge of relief, though it was tinged with annoyance as well. He couldnât explain why. He was happy his friends would be with him. Somehow Pelthiel had looked intimidating.
He canât blame me for sleepwalking, can he?
Not that Pelthiel appeared to be blaming him. He had looked and sounded worried more than anything. Why? Heldith could understand why he had spared him, but why save his life now? Why attempt to protect him? Unbidden, his recurring nightmare came to his mind. Pelthiel saving him, calling him Zeityl.
Zeityl who had been a God and who was now dead.
Somehow, he had to know more about Zeityl. Heldith had a feeling that the answers he sought lay there. But there was a frustrating lack of information about the Gods. Most people didnât even know all their names. He knew about Utfer only because the God who visited his dreams had told him. Even their priests didnât know what their powers were. How was he supposed to get information on a dead God?
Ementiar, if youâre able to hear this, please answer me.
He had no hopes; after all, he had prayed for days after his defeat and had received no response, but he didnât know what else he could do. Pelthiel was refusing any answers he might have, and he was not sure how much Sivreth would be able to help, especially since Heldith couldnât even remember his dreams.
